Seekt Quick Guide: Safety Check-ins

Welcome to the Seekt Quick Guide series. In this episode, we are looking at safety check-ins — a feature designed to keep players safe during outdoor and large-area scavenger hunts.

When you start a game, one of the configuration options is a check-in interval. You set it in minutes — say, every fifteen minutes — and once the game begins, each team's captain is periodically prompted with a safety check-in dialog. The dialog asks a simple question: "Are you OK?" The captain taps to confirm, and the timer resets for another interval.

On the host's dashboard, you can see which teams have checked in recently and which are overdue. If a team has not responded, they are flagged so you can follow up. This gives you visibility into team activity without having to call or text each group individually.

The check-in interval is measured from the last check-in, not from a fixed clock. So if a team checks in a few minutes late, the next prompt comes a full interval after that acknowledgment, not immediately.

This feature is especially useful in a few scenarios. Large outdoor areas where teams spread out over a wide space and you cannot see them directly. Events with younger participants where adults want regular confirmation that everyone is safe. Campus or city hunts where teams might wander into unfamiliar areas.

Check-ins are entirely optional. If your hunt is in a small, controlled space — a backyard, a single building — you probably do not need them. But for anything larger, they provide peace of mind for both the host and the participants.

One practical note: only the team captain sees the check-in prompt. This is by design. If every team member got prompted, it would be disruptive. The captain is responsible for confirming on behalf of the group.

That is "safety check-ins" in Seekt. For more, visit the seekt.ca website.
