Scavenger Hunt Power-Ups

Strategy matters as much as speed. Power-up items grant score multipliers when completed — teams who find a power-up early and chain it with high-value items can dominate the leaderboard. Order your items carefully and use power-ups to create comeback moments. Learn power-up mechanics below.

Seekt Quick Guide: Power-Up Items

Welcome to the Seekt Quick Guide series. In this episode, we are looking at power-up items — a feature that adds strategic depth to your scavenger hunts.

Any item in a hunt can be marked as a power-up. When a team completes a power-up item, they do not just earn the item's base points — they also activate a score multiplier that applies to their next several items. The multiplier and the number of items it covers are both set by the host during hunt design.

For example, you might create an item worth fifty points and mark it as a power-up with a two-times multiplier lasting three items. When a team completes it, they earn the fifty points as normal. Then their next three submissions each earn double points. A seventy-five point item becomes one hundred and fifty. A hundred point item becomes two hundred.

The multiplier appears as a visual indicator on the player's screen, showing the active multiplier value and how many items remain before it expires. This creates awareness and urgency — teams want to complete high-value items while the multiplier is active.

The strategy comes from timing. If a team goes after the power-up early in the game, they have more items ahead of them to benefit from the multiplier. But the power-up item itself might be harder to reach or require more effort. Teams have to weigh whether to pursue the power-up first or complete easier items and come back to it later.

Power-ups also interact with other scoring mechanics. If time-decay is enabled, the multiplier makes speed even more rewarding — a decaying item completed quickly under a multiplier earns significantly more than the same item completed slowly without one. First-finder bonuses and streak bonuses are also multiplied.

When designing a hunt with power-ups, place them thoughtfully. One or two power-ups in a hunt of twelve to fifteen items creates a meaningful strategic choice. Too many and the multiplier stops feeling special.

That is "power-up items" in Seekt. For more, visit the seekt.ca website.
